What We Like

  • Reversible design gives you a fleece jacket and a rain jacket in one
  • Fleece side is warm but not so bulky it interferes with car seat straps
  • Water-resistant shell handles drizzle and light rain well
  • Chunky zipper is easy for parents and older toddlers to manage
  • Columbia quality means it holds up to rough toddler wear

What Could Be Better

  • Shell side isn't waterproof, just water-resistant, so heavy rain soaks through
  • Not warm enough for truly cold winter climates below 30 degrees
  • The reversible design means there's always a tag or seam showing on one side

Safety Notes

Remove jacket before placing child in a car seat. Bulky coats can compress in a crash, leaving the harness too loose. Use the fleece side if you need a car-seat-compatible layer.

Buying Guide Notes

Size up one if you want it to last two seasons. For colder climates, Columbia also makes the Snuggly Bunny Bunting for younger toddlers. Patagonia makes a similar reversible jacket at about 2x the price with slightly better build quality. For a budget option, Carter's fleece jackets work fine but aren't water-resistant.

Full Review

Toddler jackets are tricky because kids this age run hot, refuse to keep them on, and grow out of them before you've gotten your money's worth. The Columbia Double Trouble solves at least two of those problems. It's reversible, so you get a cozy fleece side for chilly mornings and a water-resistant shell side for rainy days. That's two jackets for one price, which helps justify the cost when they'll outgrow it in 4-6 months. The fleece side is genuinely warm without being bulky, so it doesn't interfere with car seat straps. The shell side handles drizzle and light rain without soaking through. The zipper is chunky and easy to grab, which matters when you're trying to wrangle a squirmy toddler who has already decided they don't want to wear a jacket today. The hood fits well without flopping over their eyes. We used the fleece side probably 80% of the time for morning daycare drop-off and the shell side for rainy weekends at the park. Columbia sizing is slightly generous, so your kid will get a solid season out of it.
