What We Like
- Pressure-mounted so no drilling into walls or door frames
- Fits wide openings up to 51 inches with included extensions
- One-hand door release is a lifesaver when you're carrying a baby
- Steel frame is seriously sturdy and doesn't wobble
- Swings both directions so you won't fumble from either side
What Could Be Better
- Not safe for the top of stairs, only use at the bottom or in doorways
- Pressure mounts can scuff walls over time if you don't use the rubber bumpers
- The latch can be tricky to operate with wet hands
Safety Notes
Never use pressure-mounted gates at the top of stairs. Only hardware-mounted gates are safe for that location. Check the tension weekly to make sure the gate hasn't loosened. Make sure the bottom bar sits flush against the floor with no gaps a child could squeeze under. Stop using when your child can climb over it.
Buying Guide Notes
Measure your opening before ordering. The base gate fits 29-39 inches, and extensions bump it to 51. If you need wider than that, look at the Regalo Super Wide. For top-of-stairs, get the Regalo Top of Stairs gate that bolts into the wall. Buy two or three of these if you have multiple doorways to block off.
Full Review
We installed our first baby gate the week our daughter started army crawling toward the stairs. That was a panicked Saturday afternoon trip to the store, and honestly, we should have done it sooner. The Regalo Easy Step is the gate we landed on after returning two others that wobbled or had gaps at the bottom. This one pressure-mounts between walls, so no drilling required, which is great if you're renting or just don't want holes in your trim. It fits openings from 29 to 39 inches out of the box, and the included extensions take it up to 51 inches. The walk-through door swings both directions and has a one-hand release that adults can operate while holding a baby or a laundry basket. It's 30 inches tall, which kept our kids contained until about age 3. The steel frame is sturdy enough that even when our 2-year-old hung on it and shook it, the thing didn't budge. Fair warning though, pressure-mounted gates are not safe at the top of stairs. Use this for doorways, hallways, and the bottom of stairs only. For the top of stairs, you need a hardware-mounted gate.
