What We Like
- Award-winning design that engages babies from newborn through 12+ months
- Squishes flat and bounces back, which babies find endlessly entertaining
- Wooden construction with water-based finish feels premium and natural
- Lightweight enough for young babies to hold and shake independently
- Multiple play modes: rattle, teether, grasping, squishing
What Could Be Better
- The beads can get gummy with drool and need regular wiping
- Not dishwasher safe since it's wood, hand washing only
- Smaller than it looks in photos, which surprises some buyers
Safety Notes
Water-based, non-toxic finish safe for mouthing. Meets CPSC and ASTM toy safety standards. Inspect elastic connectors regularly for wear. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Do not submerge in water as it can damage the wood.
Buying Guide Notes
This is one of the best baby shower gifts under $15. Get the Classic size for the best grip-to-hand ratio. Manhattan Toy also makes the Winkel (a teether with looped tubes) which pairs well with the Skwish. For a full sensory toy set, combine the Skwish, Dimpl, and a crinkle toy for a diaper bag kit.
Full Review
The Skwish has won basically every baby toy award in existence, and when you hand one to a baby, you understand why. It's a geometric wooden structure connected by elastic cords with sliding beads. Baby can squeeze it flat and it springs back to shape. They can shake it and the beads rattle. They can chew on the smooth wooden dowels. They can grab any part of it from any angle, which is perfect for developing grasp reflex. It's one of those rare toys that works from birth (as a visual and rattle) through the first year (as a teether and manipulative toy). The wooden construction feels premium compared to the plastic toys that dominate the baby aisle. It's surprisingly light for wood, so even young babies can hold and shake it. The elastic connectors are fully enclosed inside the wooden dowels so there's no pinch risk. We gave these as baby shower gifts for two years straight because they're universally loved. The only complaint is that the beads can get gummed up with drool and stop sliding smoothly, but a quick wipe fixes that.
