What We Like

  • Free-spinning shell makes knobs impossible for toddlers to turn
  • Adults squeeze and turn easily, even with one hand
  • Snap-on installation takes literally 5 seconds per knob
  • No tools, no adhesive, no damage to doors
  • Durable plastic survives daily toddler abuse without cracking

What Could Be Better

  • Only works on round knobs, not lever-style handles
  • Look a bit clunky and aren't exactly decorative
  • Very strong or older toddlers (close to 3) can sometimes figure them out

Safety Notes

Put these on all exterior doors immediately once your child can reach the knob. Also cover doors to rooms with hazards like the garage, basement, or bathrooms with medications. Not a substitute for deadbolts and proper locks on exterior doors. Check fit periodically as some knob shapes may allow the cover to loosen over time.

Buying Guide Notes

Prioritize exterior doors and any doors leading to dangerous areas like basements, garages, or pools. If you have lever-style handles, the Safety 1st lever handle lock is what you need instead. These are for round knobs only. The 4-pack is usually enough for the critical doors, but order a second pack if you have a larger home. Check your knob diameter before ordering. Standard round knobs fit, but oversized decorative knobs might not.

Full Review

The day our son figured out how to open doors was genuinely terrifying. He waltzed out the front door while we were in the kitchen. Just opened it and went outside. He was maybe 20 months old. We ordered these door knob covers that same hour. They snap over standard round door knobs and create a smooth outer shell that spins freely when small hands try to grip it. Adults just squeeze the sides and turn normally. Kids under 3 or so don't have the hand strength or coordination to squeeze and turn at the same time. We put them on the front door, the back door, the bathroom, and the basement door. Problem solved overnight. They fit most standard round knobs, but they won't work on lever-style handles (you'll need lever locks for those). The plastic is durable enough that they survived daily attempts by our very determined toddler without cracking or breaking. They do look a little silly, but that's a minor trade-off for not having your toddler let himself out of the house. Installation is literally just snapping them on. No tools, no adhesive, nothing to damage the door. They pop right off when you don't need them anymore. Get the 4-pack because you'll need them on multiple doors. Trust me on this one.
