What We Like
- Keeps doors locked open or closed with no tools or drilling
- Doubles as a finger pinch guard when set to slightly open
- Installs and removes in seconds with no damage
- Out of reach for toddlers but easy for adults
What Could Be Better
- Doesn't work on doors thicker than 1.75 inches or with rounded tops
- Only works on hinged doors, not sliding doors
- Taller 3-year-olds might be able to reach it if they stretch or use a step stool
Safety Notes
Make sure the clamp is fully seated on the door before relying on it. Test by pulling firmly on the door handle after installation. This is not a substitute for a proper gate at the top of stairs. Check periodically that your child hasn't figured out how to reach it.
Buying Guide Notes
Buy at least 3 or 4, one for each door you need to control. The slightly-open setting is perfect for nursery doors at night when you want airflow but don't want your toddler escaping. If you need to lock a lever-style door handle instead, the Safety 1st lever handle lock is a better option. For pocket or sliding doors, you'll need a different solution entirely.
Full Review
Once your toddler figures out door handles, a whole new world of chaos opens up. They let themselves into bathrooms, closets, the garage, wherever you don't want them going. The Door Monkey clips onto the top of any standard door and locks it in place. You can set it to keep the door fully closed or slightly ajar (about 3 inches), which is brilliant for bedrooms where you want airflow and the ability to hear them but don't want them wandering the house at 2am. It doubles as a pinch guard because when the door is locked slightly open, little fingers can't get crushed in the door jamb. Installation takes about 10 seconds with no tools and no damage to the door. You just clip it on and adjust the claw. Adults can reach up and release it easily, but it's out of reach for kids until they're tall enough to not need a door lock anymore. We put these on our kids' bedroom doors, the bathroom, and the door to the basement stairs. They work on doors that are 1.25 to 1.75 inches thick, which covers most interior doors. The only catch is they don't work on doors with rounded tops or super thick frames.
