What We Like

  • Low seat height perfect for newly walking toddlers to scoot independently
  • Quiet wheels work great indoors on hardwood, tile, and laminate
  • Wide base prevents tipping even with enthusiastic toddler steering
  • Under-seat storage compartment that toddlers love to fill with treasures
  • Lightweight enough for parents to carry to the park with one hand

What Could Be Better

  • Not great on grass, gravel, or rough outdoor surfaces
  • No pedals, so it's purely foot-powered scooting
  • The turning radius is a bit wide for tight indoor spaces

Safety Notes

Maximum weight 42 lbs. Always supervise riding, especially near stairs, driveways, or streets. Not intended for use on slopes or inclines. Helmet recommended for outdoor use on driveways. Do not use near swimming pools or water.

Buying Guide Notes

This is the best first ride-on for toddlers. The Strider balance bike is the next step up for outdoor riding when they're around 18-24 months. If you want something with pedals right away, the Fisher-Price Harley-Davidson Tough Trike works for 2+ year olds. For indoor use specifically, the Radio Flyer Scoot About is quieter and more manageable than most alternatives.

Full Review

Once your toddler is walking confidently, they want to go faster. The Radio Flyer Scoot About is the perfect bridge between walking and their first bike or trike. The seat is low enough that even newly walking 12-month-olds can sit on it and push themselves along with their feet. The handlebars turn for real steering, and the wide base means it doesn't tip over easily. Our son used this thing daily from 13 months to about 2.5 years. He'd scoot around the kitchen, down the hallway, and around the driveway. The wheels are quiet enough for indoor use on hardwood and tile, which is a huge win because some ride-on toys sound like a freight train inside. It works fine outdoors on smooth surfaces too, though it's not great on grass or gravel. The under-seat storage compartment is a cute detail that toddlers love filling with random things (ours stored a sock, two blocks, and a cheese stick for an entire week). Assembly takes about 10 minutes. The whole thing is lightweight and easy to carry to the park. At under $35, it's an incredible deal for something that gets years of use.
