Our Full Review

Nobody tells you this before you have kids, but toddlers are obsessed with toilets. They want to splash in them. They throw toys in them. They try to drink from them. Our son dropped a TV remote, a shoe, and an entire roll of toilet paper into the toilet in the span of one week. That was the week we installed the Safety 1st toilet lock. It's a simple adhesive-mounted arm that hooks over the front of the toilet lid and keeps it locked shut. The release mechanism requires an adult to press a button on the arm while lifting, which is too complex for kids under 3 to figure out. Installation takes about 5 minutes with the included adhesive strips, no tools needed. You stick the base to the top of the toilet bowl and the hook to the underside of the lid. Let the adhesive cure for 24 hours before use and it'll stay put. The lock works on most standard round and elongated toilets. Beyond the gross factor of your kid playing in toilet water, there's a real drowning risk. Toddlers are top-heavy and can fall headfirst into a toilet and not be able to get themselves out. This isn't an exaggeration. It's a recognized drowning hazard. A $10 toilet lock is a no-brainer addition to your baby proofing list.

What We Like

  • Prevents drowning risk from toddlers falling headfirst into toilets
  • Stops the endless parade of toys and objects getting thrown in
  • Adhesive mount needs no tools or drilling
  • Adult release button is simple for parents but too complex for toddlers

What Could Be Better

  • Every adult in the house has to remember to re-lock it after using the toilet
  • Adhesive can loosen on textured or non-smooth porcelain surfaces
  • Guests sometimes get confused by it and forget to re-lock

Safety Notes

Toddler drowning in toilets is a real and documented risk. The AAP recommends toilet locks for homes with young children. Let adhesive cure for a full 24 hours before relying on the lock. Clean the mounting surface with rubbing alcohol before applying. Check adhesion monthly and replace if the base starts to move.

Buying Guide Notes

Buy one for every bathroom your toddler can access. The adhesive version is best for most people, but if you have textured porcelain, you might need a clamp-style lock instead. The Safety 1st Outsmart version has a decoy button that tricks toddlers who try to watch you open it, which is a nice touch. Also consider locking the bathroom door entirely with a door knob cover if your layout allows it.
