Our Full Review
Regular spoons don't work when babies are first learning to self-feed. They can't scoop, they can't balance food on a rounded spoon, and everything ends up on the floor. NumNum GOOtensils fix this with a flat, textured design where food clings to tiny bumps and channels on the surface. Baby just has to dip it in puree and bring it to their mouth. That's it. No scooping skill required. We introduced these at 6 months when starting purees, and our daughter's face when she successfully fed herself for the first time was priceless. They come in two stages: Stage 1 has a flatter design for thinner purees, Stage 2 has deeper grooves for thicker foods. The short, chubby handle is sized for baby's grip. They're made from food-grade silicone and go in the dishwasher. At around $10 for a set of two, they're a cheap way to encourage self-feeding confidence early. Don't expect miracles. Most of the food still ends up on the bib. But they give baby a fighting chance.
What We Like
- Textured flat surface lets food cling so baby can actually self-feed
- Two stages that progress from thin purees to thicker foods
- Short chubby handle is sized perfectly for baby's grip
- Affordable and dishwasher safe for easy cleanup
What Could Be Better
- Only work well with purees and soft foods, not for chunkier meals
- Baby will still make a huge mess, these don't prevent that
- The novelty wears off once baby masters regular spoons around 14-16 months
Safety Notes
Made from BPA-free, food-grade silicone. Always supervise baby during self-feeding. Inspect for tears or damage before each use. Not designed for use with very hot foods.
Buying Guide Notes
Get these when you start purees around 6 months. They bridge the gap between parent-fed spoon feeding and true self-feeding with regular utensils. Pair with the ezpz mat for a complete self-feeding setup. Once baby masters these (usually around 12-14 months), transition to the Munchkin Raise toddler fork and spoon.
