When you're starting solids and terrified of choking (which is completely normal, by the way), mesh feeders are your best friend. Stick a chunk of frozen banana, a strawberry, or some steamed sweet potato in the mesh pouch, snap it shut, and hand it to baby. They gnaw and suck on it, getting the flavor and some nutrition, while the mesh keeps any large pieces from breaking off. Our son used these constantly during teething because frozen fruit in the mesh was the only thing that soothed his gums. Way better than those plastic teething rings he had zero interest in. The Munchkin version is cheap and gets the job done. You'll want at least two because they're in constant rotation. The downside? Cleaning the mesh is annoying. Food gets stuck in it and you really need to rinse it out immediately after use or it gets gross. Some parents prefer the silicone feeder versions (Boon makes one) because silicone is easier to clean, but the mesh lets more flavor through.

Safety Notes
Always inspect the mesh for tears or holes before each use. Replace if mesh is damaged. Supervise baby at all times during use. Clean thoroughly and dry completely between uses to prevent mold growth.
