Our Full Review

A spray is easier to build a habit around than a soak, because it doesn't need a bath to happen. A few sprays on the legs after pyjamas is a thirty-second step you can do every night, including on the nights when a bath isn't happening. The same honest caveat applies as with the soak: the routine and the moment of touch are doing most of the work, and the evidence for magnesium through skin is not strong. Magnesium oil can tingle or sting on broken skin or fresh scratches, which for a preschooler is most of the time, so patch-test first.

What We Like

  • Works on nights when a bath doesn't happen, unlike the soak
  • Thirty seconds, so it survives contact with a real bedtime
  • The rubbing-in is a moment of calm contact in itself

What Could Be Better

  • Stings on scratches and grazes, which preschoolers always have
  • $25, and the evidence for skin absorption is weak

Safety Notes

Contains essential oils. Pediatric guidance is to keep essential oils away from babies and to patch-test on older children before wider use, so we map these to 3 years and up regardless of what the label allows. Keep away from eyes, hands that go in mouths, and broken skin. Never diffuse in a closed room where a child sleeps. If your child has asthma, eczema or a known sensitivity, ask your pediatrician first. Magnesium oil stings on broken skin. Patch-test on a small area first and avoid scratches, grazes and eczema.

Buying Guide Notes

Choose the spray over the soak if your bedtime doesn't reliably include a bath. If it does, the soak is cheaper per night.
