Our Full Review
The alphabet is a structure every preschooler already understands, and this uses it to hang one calming idea on each letter. That's a smarter format than it first appears, because it gives you somewhere to start on a bad afternoon instead of trying to invent a strategy while a child is mid-meltdown. It was on Oprah's Favorite Things in 2021, which is why you may have seen it. At $19.99 it sits between the breathing ball and the bigger items, and it's the one that gives the adult the most to work with. If you want the tool your child holds, buy the ball. If you want the thing that tells you what to try next, buy this.
What We Like
- Gives the adult a next move, which is the thing that's actually missing mid-meltdown
- The alphabet structure is one preschoolers already know
- Cheaper than the physical calm-down toys
What Could Be Better
- It's a resource rather than a toy, so it needs you to use it
- Some letters are more of a stretch than others, as with every A to Z
Safety Notes
A parenting resource, not a medical one. If your child's anxiety or distress is affecting daily life, talk to your pediatrician rather than relying on a calm-down activity set.
Buying Guide Notes
The natural companion to the breathing ball: one gives your child something to do, this gives you something to suggest. Together they're still less than a Weighted Buddy.
