Our Full Review

Wooden blocks are the original STEM toy. They teach gravity, balance, spatial reasoning, color recognition, shape sorting, and creative thinking, all without a single battery. This Melissa & Doug set gives you 100 blocks in four colors and nine shapes, which is enough for serious building projects. Our daughter started stacking two blocks at 12 months (and immediately knocking them down, which she thought was the funniest thing ever). By 2, she was building towers of 8-10 blocks and roads for her toy cars. By 3, she's making houses with doors and furniture inside. The play value extends for years. The blocks are solid wood with smooth edges and non-toxic paint. They're heavy enough to stack well but light enough not to hurt when they inevitably get thrown at your head. They come in a nice wooden carrying case, which is great in theory until your kid dumps all 100 blocks on the floor in 3 seconds. These will outlast every electronic toy in your house. Your grandkids might play with these same blocks.

What We Like

  • 100 blocks in 9 shapes provide endless building possibilities that grow with your child
  • Solid wood construction lasts literally forever, no batteries to die
  • Teaches spatial reasoning, gravity, balance, and colors through natural play
  • Smooth edges and non-toxic paint make them safe for younger toddlers
  • Includes a wooden carrying crate for storage (good luck getting them all back in there)

What Could Be Better

  • 100 blocks scattered across your living room floor is a barefoot hazard
  • They're loud when they crash on hardwood, and they will crash constantly
  • Younger toddlers mostly just dump and scatter them, actual building comes later

Safety Notes

Recommended for ages 2+ but supervised play from 12 months is fine. Blocks are large enough to not be a choking hazard. Check regularly for splinters or paint chips on heavily used blocks. Do not allow throwing at people or pets.

Buying Guide Notes

Start with this set and you probably won't need another block set for years. If you want magnetic blocks, Magna-Tiles are the premium upgrade for age 3+. LEGO Duplo is another direction for the 18-month+ crowd. But plain wooden blocks remain the gold standard for open-ended play. This is a perfect gift that parents will actually appreciate.
