Our Full Review
There's a reason you see the Manhattan Toy Winkel in every pediatrician's waiting room and every baby class. It just works. The design is a tangled ball of colorful, soft plastic tubes connected to a central rattle. Babies can grab it from any angle (no "wrong" way to hold it), the tubes are the perfect thickness for gumming, and the center rattles when they shake it. Our son got his around 2 months and it was his go-to for the entire first year. The BPA-free tubes are soft enough to feel good on sore gums but firm enough to provide real teething pressure. You can refrigerate it for extra soothing (don't freeze it though, that makes the plastic brittle). It's lightweight enough for a 3-month-old to hold, which matters because most "baby" toys are too heavy for actual babies. The loops interlock in a way that makes it surprisingly grippy for tiny hands. It cleans easily with soap and water. At around $12, it's one of the cheapest baby products that genuinely earns daily use. We've gifted this to at least six new parents and every single one has thanked us.
What We Like
- Graspable from any angle, so there's no wrong way for baby to hold it
- Soft, BPA-free tubes are perfect for teething and gumming
- Lightweight enough for even young babies to hold and manipulate
- Central rattle adds auditory stimulation when shaken
- Can be refrigerated for extra teething relief on sore gums
What Could Be Better
- The tubes can trap water inside if fully submerged, so don't soak it
- Some babies throw it constantly because it's light (but that's all babies, really)
Safety Notes
BPA-free, phthalate-free. Meets ASTM F963 toy safety standards. Do not freeze, only refrigerate. Do not submerge fully in water as tubes can trap moisture. Wipe clean with mild soap and water. Inspect regularly for cracks or damage.
Buying Guide Notes
This is a no-brainer baby gift at under $15. Pair it with a pacifier clip so it doesn't end up on the ground every 30 seconds. The Nuby IcyBite teething keys are a good companion for variety. If you want a wooden teether option, the Maple Landmark Ring Rattle is lovely. But the Winkel is the crowd-pleaser that works for every baby.
