Our daughter's first word was "dog" and I'm pretty sure it's because she pressed the dog button on this book approximately 4,000 times. The LeapFrog 100 Words Book has touch-sensitive pictures on each page. Touch an animal and it says the word, makes the animal sound, and sometimes plays a little fact. Three play modes: word mode, music mode, and sound effects mode keep it interesting beyond just vocabulary. The bilingual English-Spanish feature is a nice bonus, and kids pick up the Spanish words surprisingly fast just through repetition. Each page is organized by category (animals, food, activities, etc.), which helps with learning context. The volume has two settings (both too loud for a quiet house, honestly). Pages are thick plastic, so they survive toddler handling without ripping. We had this on heavy rotation from about 14 months to well past 2 years. The battery life is decent and it takes standard AA batteries. At around $15-18, the educational value per dollar is outstanding.

Meets CPSC toy safety standards. Battery compartment is screw-secured. Not waterproof. Wipe with a damp cloth only. Supervise use to prevent chewing on the pages.

This is one of the best educational toys for the 12-36 month range. LeapFrog also makes a 100 Animals book and a 100 Words About Places book if your kid loves the original.
