Our Full Review

Sun protection for babies is non-negotiable. Babies under 6 months can't even wear sunscreen, so a good hat is literally your first line of defense. The Jan & Jul sun hat has a wide brim that covers the face, ears, and back of neck. The UPF 50+ rating blocks 98% of UV rays. But here's what makes this one special: the adjustable chin strap actually keeps it on. Every parent knows the frustration of putting a hat on a baby only to watch them rip it off 4 seconds later. The strap on this one has a breakaway safety release so it won't be a choking hazard, but it's snug enough that casual swats won't dislodge it. The drawstring at the back adjusts the head circumference, which means you don't have to buy a new hat every 3 months as your baby's head grows. The fabric is lightweight and breathable so baby's head doesn't turn into a sweat factory. We used the same hat from about 4 months through 18 months just by adjusting the drawstring. It's machine washable, dries fast, and packs flat in a diaper bag. Get one in every color because you'll use it constantly from spring through fall.

What We Like

  • UPF 50+ blocks 98% of UV rays for real sun protection
  • Chin strap with breakaway release keeps the hat on without choking hazard
  • Adjustable drawstring means one hat fits for months as baby's head grows
  • Lightweight breathable fabric doesn't overheat baby's head
  • Machine washable and packs flat in a diaper bag

What Could Be Better

  • Some determined babies will still manage to pull it off (you can't win every battle)
  • The brim can flop into baby's eyes if it gets wet
  • Limited winter color options, mostly summer prints

Safety Notes

Chin strap has a breakaway safety buckle to prevent choking. UPF 50+ fabric, but still apply sunscreen to exposed skin for babies 6 months and older. Never rely on a hat alone for sun protection. Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight when possible.

Buying Guide Notes

The grow-with-me sizing means you can buy one and adjust. Measure your baby's head circumference and check the size chart carefully. iplay makes a similar UPF hat at a lower price but without the adjustable drawstring. Sunday Afternoons makes a premium version with a flap that extends down the neck.
