Our Full Review
Toddlers want to hit things. That's just a fact of life between 12 and 36 months. The Hape Pound & Tap Bench gives them something appropriate to whack. Three colorful balls sit on top, and your kid hammers them with the included mallet. They drop through the holes and roll across the xylophone underneath, making musical notes as they go. Then you pull the xylophone out and it becomes a standalone instrument they can play with the mallet. Two toys in one, and both involve hitting, which is exactly what toddlers want to do. The construction is solid wood with non-toxic, water-based paint. Hape's quality is a clear step above the cheap wooden toys you'll find at discount stores. The edges are well-rounded, the mallet is sturdy, and the xylophone is actually tuned to real notes (not just random pings). Our son got this at 12 months and it's been hammered on daily for over a year. Still works perfectly. The balls occasionally get lost under furniture, so maybe keep track of those. At $25-30, it's a great price for a wooden musical toy that lasts. It's also one of the few toddler toys that looks nice enough to leave out on the living room floor without feeling embarrassed when friends come over.
What We Like
- Two toys in one: pounding bench plus pull-out xylophone
- Solid wood construction with non-toxic, water-based paint
- Xylophone is actually tuned to real notes for genuine musical play
- Satisfies toddlers' need to hit things in a constructive way
- Attractive enough to leave out as a display piece in the living room
What Could Be Better
- The balls roll away and end up under furniture constantly
- Hammering is loud on hard floors, and toddlers don't have a quiet setting
- The mallet is a weapon in the wrong toddler's hands, so supervise accordingly
Safety Notes
Non-toxic, water-based paint finishes. Meets ASTM F963 toy safety standards. Supervise play with the mallet, as toddlers can swing it at siblings, pets, and furniture. The balls are designed larger than choking size. Inspect wooden edges periodically for splintering.
Buying Guide Notes
Hape makes excellent wooden toys across the board. If your toddler loves this, their pull-back cars, bead mazes, and tool benches are all great follow-ups. The Melissa & Doug Deluxe Pounding Bench is a similar but slightly cheaper alternative. For a standalone xylophone, the Fisher-Price Classic Xylophone is the budget pick. But the Hape combo gives you more play value per dollar.
