Our Full Review
This one is serious. Window falls are one of the leading causes of injury and death for young children, and a lot of parents don't realize that window screens are designed to keep bugs out, not kids in. A toddler can push right through a standard screen without much effort. If you have windows that open and your child can reach the sill, you need window guards. The Guardian Angel window guard is an adjustable steel bar system that mounts inside the window frame. It fits windows 23 to 35 inches wide and extends to fit. The bars are spaced close enough that a child can't squeeze through. The guard has a quick-release mechanism for emergency fire egress so adults can remove it fast if needed. Installation requires screws into the window frame, so this is a more permanent solution than most baby proofing products. It takes about 15-20 minutes per window with a drill. We installed these on every second-story window in our house and the windows in our kids' bedrooms. Our son went through a phase of climbing everything at 18 months, including the couch under the window. Without these guards, I don't want to think about what could have happened. Yes, they change the look of your windows. Yes, they require drilling. But window fall prevention is not something you compromise on. If your child can reach a window that opens, install guards. Period.

Safety Notes
Window screens are NOT safety devices and will not prevent a child from falling. Install window guards on all windows a child can access, especially above the first floor. Test the emergency release mechanism after installation. Never place furniture near windows that a child could climb. Some municipalities require window guards in buildings with children. Check your local codes.
Buying Guide Notes
Prioritize second-story windows and any window near furniture a child could climb. Measure your window width before ordering. If your windows are wider than 35 inches, look for the wider models or use two side by side. For first-floor windows, window stops that limit how far the window opens (to 4 inches or less) are an alternative. But for upper floors, bar-style guards are the safest option. Buy enough for every accessible window, not just the ones you think are risky.
