Our Full Review
Getting a newborn in and out of a car seat during winter is one of those parenting tasks nobody warns you about. You can't put a puffy coat on them because it compresses under the harness and makes it unsafe. So your options are: freeze your baby during the transfer, or use something like the Cozy Cover. It goes over the top of the infant car seat (not under baby, not between baby and the harness) so it doesn't affect car seat safety at all. There's a dual-zipper system that lets you open just the top to check on baby or fully open the front for getting them in and out. The elastic edge stretches over most infant car seats. We used it with a Graco SnugRide and a Chicco KeyFit, and it fit both. The fleece interior is warm without being bulky. The outer shell repels light rain and blocks wind. It's not rated for serious downpours, but for the dash from the house to the car in typical winter weather, it works great. When spring comes, you just fold it up and store it. Our only gripe is that the elastic can stretch out by the end of winter if you're pulling it on and off multiple times a day, but it still holds well enough to work.
What We Like
- Goes over the car seat, not under baby, so it doesn't affect harness safety
- Dual-zipper system makes checking on baby and getting them in/out easy
- Fleece interior is cozy without adding bulk under the harness
- Fits most major infant car seat brands with its elastic edge
- Blocks wind and light rain during transfers from house to car
What Could Be Better
- Elastic can stretch out by end of season with heavy daily use
- Not suitable for heavy rain or extended outdoor exposure
- Only fits infant bucket seats, not convertible car seats
Safety Notes
This cover goes over the car seat canopy, never between baby and the harness straps. Never use puffy coats or aftermarket inserts that go behind baby in a car seat. Always ensure the harness is properly snug against baby's body. Remove the cover when the car's heater has warmed up to prevent overheating.
Buying Guide Notes
If you live somewhere with real winters (we're talking below 30 degrees regularly), this is a must-have for the newborn stage. The JJ Cole alternative is similar in quality. For milder climates, a simple muslin blanket draped over the car seat handle works fine. This is only useful for infant bucket seats, so you'll outgrow it around 12 months when you switch to a convertible seat.
