Baby Registry Must-Haves (and What to Leave Off)
Baby registries are a trap. The store gives you a scanner, walks you through 47 aisles of pastel products, and suddenly you've registered for a $200 wipe warmer. You don't need 80% of what the registry checklists tell you. Here's what you actually need, ranked by how much you'll use it.
Tier 1: Can't Survive Without
**Car seat.** Non-negotiable. You literally can't leave the hospital without one. An infant car seat with a base (Chicco KeyFit 35, $200) or a convertible car seat that works from birth (Graco Extend2Fit, $200). One or the other.
**Safe sleep space.** A crib ($80 to $250) with a firm mattress ($55 to $200) and 2 to 3 fitted sheets. That's it for the sleep setup. Bassinet is optional for the first few months.
**Diapers and wipes.** Register for sizes 1 through 3 (skip newborn size or get just one small pack). Register for more size 2 and 3 than size 1 because they're in those sizes longer. Wipes in bulk.
**A way to feed baby.** If breastfeeding: nursing pillow (Brest Friend or Boppy), breast pump (insurance covers one), bottles for pumped milk. If formula feeding: bottles (6 to 8), formula, bottle brush.
**Onesies and sleepers.** 6 to 8 onesies and 4 to 6 footie sleepers in size 0 to 3 months. Zippers over snaps. Don't go wild on newborn sizes.
Tier 2: Makes Life Significantly Better
**Stroller.** Full-size for everyday use. If budget is tight, a travel system bundles the stroller with a matching car seat.
**Baby carrier.** Wrap for newborn stage (Solly Baby, $65) or structured carrier for 3+ months (Ergobaby, $130 to $180).
**Sound machine.** Not optional in our house. The Hatch Rest ($70) or Yogasleep Dohm ($45) will save nighttime sleep.
**Swaddles.** 3 to 4 swaddle blankets or velcro swaddles (Halo, $25 to $30 each).
**Diaper bag.** Backpack style, gender-neutral. $35 to $185 depending on brand.
**Changing pad.** A contoured changing pad for the dresser top plus a portable one for the diaper bag.
Tier 3: Nice to Have
**Baby monitor.** Video if you want visual peace of mind, audio if you prefer simple. $50 to $200.
**Bouncer or swing.** The BabyBjorn Bouncer Bliss ($200) or Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Rocker ($40). Gives you a safe place to put baby down while you eat, shower, or use the bathroom.
**Play mat or activity gym.** Lovevery Play Gym ($140) or a thick blanket on the floor with some toys.
**High chair** (register for it now, use it around 6 months). IKEA Antilop ($20) or Stokke Tripp Trapp ($250).
**Bathtub.** Skip Hop Moby ($25) or just use the kitchen sink.
What to Leave Off the Registry
**Wipe warmer.** Room temperature wipes are fine. The warmer dries out the top wipes and it's one more thing to plug in.
**Bottle sterilizer.** Hot soapy water works after the first 3 months. The dishwasher basket works before that.
**Diaper pail.** A regular trash can with a lid works fine and doesn't require special refill bags.
**Baby shoes for newborns.** They can't walk. Socks are all they need.
**A newborn wardrobe.** Babies outgrow newborn clothes in 1 to 3 weeks. Don't overbuy this size.
**Crib bedding sets.** Bumpers aren't safe. Quilts aren't safe in the crib. All you need are fitted sheets.
Registry Strategy Tips
**Register at 2 stores** for price range variety (Amazon for convenience, Buy Buy Baby or Target for in-store returns). Set up a completion discount (most stores give 10 to 15% off remaining items after the baby shower). Ask for gift cards in larger denominations so you can buy consumables like diapers and formula as needed.
And seriously, don't register for stuff just because the checklist suggests it. If you're not sure you'll use something, leave it off and buy it later if you actually need it.
